How to style your home office

When it comes to working from home, it’s important to create a zone that allows you to be productive and organised, but also to feel calm and happy. Styling your home office is a great opportunity to inject your own style and personality into your work space... no more generic work pods and uniform options for functionality.

Your home office space can be as creative or as simple as you desire it to be. From a small nook to a large dedicated room; there are plenty of ways to take your home office from drab to fab!

Layout and Task Lighting

Think about the space and where you would like your desk to go; this will be important later when you choose a desk for the room. You may want to face your window, or perhaps you prefer to have the window behind you; using the available natural light is a nice way to work. Be mindful of any glare on your screen as this can cause strain on your eyes. A lamp on your desk is a great way to increase lighting, as well as good overheads such as downlights.

Once you know where you want to fit your desk, you can look at the overall layout and measure up for additional furniture such as shelving or a small couch.

Desk and Chair

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to a desk but I suggest choosing something that is practical but stylish

enough to go the distance. Your desk size should allow you enough room to fit your screen(s) as well as having ample room for documentation and/or writing space. Ideally your monitor should be about an arms length away and your wrists should be straight, not reaching up or sloping down to the desk.

Ensure your chair fits the desk and provides support for your back. To maintain good posture at your desk, your knees should be level with your hips when you’re seated. Of course, you could always opt for a standing or adjustable desk!

Storage & Occasional Furniture

There’s nothing worse than not having the space to store your files and work equipment. You can use a simple bookshelf (open or enclosed) or you can utilise an elegant side board which has cupboard space and drawers.

Make sure that the item you choose ties in with your desk; it doesn’t have to match it, but it should compliment. This will help create a considered and connected space.

You want your space to feel inviting for you, so why not add a comfortable occasional chair or two if the space allows. This option not only gives you a space to meet people, if permitted but also gives you a break out zone to sit to mix up your work day.

Rugs & Wall Art

Rugs are a quick way to transform a room without going through the hassle of all new flooring. A rug will add texture and colour to your space and can also be used to anchor your furniture. A rug is particularly handy if you want to ‘float’ your desk in the middle of your room rather than positioning it along a wall.

Wall art can also be transformative for your space and adds a personal touch. You can choose something that inspires you or something that motivates you, or simply choose something that adds to the overall feel of the room in general.

And last but not least, bring some fresh air and outdoor vibes to your space; open a window or use an oil diffuser to stimulate the senses. Add an easy to care for plant or two to help brighten the space and bring a little of the outdoors in!
