Did you know that we spend one third of our lives in bed? Between the Netflix and chill sessions, cosying up with a good book, snuggle time with our significant other, and that all important sleep at the end of a long working day – it’s no wonder we spend so much time between the sheets!

Given we do spend so long in our beds, it’s safe to say that prospective buyers will be looking out for bedroom spaces which exude tranquillity, sophistication, and offer a safe haven for retreat.

Whether you’re looking to sell, or to create the bedroom of your own dreams, we’ve round up our top 4 must-haves to consider when styling the boudoir.

Symmetry is essential

This one is pretty self-explanatory! If your symmetry is out whack, prospective buyers are likely to feel disjointed and unbalanced within the bedroom. Believe it or not, symmetrical design appeals to our subconscious, so we tend to find symmetrical spaces more peaceful than asymmetrical spaces. A bedroom which is cluttered, or furnished in an asymmetrical manner will cause quite the opposite emotive response to the calm and tranquil vibes we want to portray.

Firstly, it is so important to create a sense of balance with the use of bedside tables and matching lamps. We recommend using two bedside tables, one on each side of the bed which are spaced an equal distance away from the bed. You should then dress these tables with matching lamps and décor, ensuring that any ornaments are grouped equally in weight on each side. For example – you might group in weights of three: a lamp, succulent and a crystal on one side – and a lamp, book and clock on the other. Our Bedroom Packs offer a range of suitable bedside lamp and greenery options depending on the size of your bedroom and requirements.

Secondly, while you might think that the bed will be the focal point within the bedroom, you might also consider having artwork as the statement piece. Artwork is important when discussing symmetry as you will need to make sure that the art is the right size for the room. Sometimes it’s easier to start with your artwork, and then choose your bedding and soft furnishings based on the size and colour of the artwork.

Lights, camera, action!

There’s one sure-fast way to set the mood, and that is with lighting! In order to create a calm and cosy space, we recommend using lamps which emit a warm light.

Table lamps are wonderful for night-time reading, but also consider using warm coloured lightbulbs in your ceiling mount fixtures and pendant lighting. Prospective buyers will love the feeling of warmth emanating from the bedroom space!

Layers are your best friend

As the seasons begin to change, and cooler autumn nights become the norm – it’s the perfect time to start playing with layers! Our Bedroom Packs offer many cushions to style your bed, but you can also have a go at layering throws, blankets and coverlets. This is a really fun way to experiment with colour and textures so make sure you don’t take this process too seriously! Mix and match different size cushions, and have a play with complementary colours.

As winter fast approaches, we love having a throw handy to cosy up with, alongside a cup of tea and a good magazine! Set the scene for prospective buyers, because chances are, if you enjoy this cosy space – so will they!

Bring the outdoors, in!

We can’t get enough of greenery here at RAHS HQ! An essential way to create a mindful bedroom space, is to bring the outdoors, inside with greenery! Certain plants can improve the air quality within the bedroom, as well as absorb carbon dioxide while you sleep. So we definitely encourage you to go out and cut some lovely clippings from your garden, or head to your local florist for some fresh blooms.

Alternatively, fake flowers look extremely authentic nowadays, so this is another great way to freshen up the bedroom. Just remember to regularly dust them so they can continue to look as beautiful as the day you first purchased them!

Whether you decide on fake blooms or the real deal – having flowers within the bedroom will definitely create a sense of natural tranquillity.
